Digital nomads

There are plenty of resources out there from people who consider themselves to be successful ‘digital nomads’ and will happily retrospectively tell you how they achieved their success. What there are a lot less of, are people blogging about their journey to become digital nomads as it happens, documenting the false-starts and failures along the […]

Less than 2 month to go!

The first leg of the journey is booked! Yay. Jeepie and I will board the ferry in Bellingham on May 15 to go to Alaska, first stop is Juneau, then I spend one night on Kodiak Island (with the bears!) and finally start the road trip in Homer, Alaska. The trip is less than 2 month away and I thought I’d update you on what has happened so far and where I stand in terms of preparation and planning. 1. Formalities After 11 years of absence I officially reside in Germany again! Yet, I am still in the Luxembourgish social security system and my status is called…

97 Days left…

We have 97 days left until we leave and we’ve reduced the list of renovations to do around the house to two sides of an A4 page of refill paper. I think we’ll call that a win!

One step closer

We’re making progress. The to do list is still rather long, but last week we got our visas for the USA, so now there’s no rush to see it all in 90 days. This week we booked our flights to Alaska. Now we just need to find a long-term cat-sitter…

Three Years ago

Three years ago, our PanAmerican road trip was just an idea that we hadn’t really made any progress on planning for. But three years ago we were given a big kick in the pants by a devastating earthquake wreaking havoc on our previously peaceful home town. Many people lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods and had their […]

You’re buying your vehicle in Alaska? …ooh

Our flight arrived into Anchorage shortly after midnight. As we had flown north it had become gradually lighter and lighter, so that by the time we were coming in to land we could see the rugged snowcapped peaks receding into the twilight. The excitement was building—we were finally arriving in Alaska. Not being ones for […]

Saying goodbye to a four legged friend

It can be hard saying goodbye to the hairiest of family members. Alex, our 12-year-old German Shepherd was at one time going to be our third super-furry expedition member, but as time passed and he got older we realised he was going to be happier staying in New Zealand. As he aged, he craved the […]

Goodbyes

After three years of saving and planning (probably not quite enough of either) the day finally came to leave on our journey. In the weeks leading up to this it was time to say goodbye, to friends, family, pets, places and all things familiar. The first big transition was leaving our jobs, I’ve worked in […]

So long, old friend

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a trusted friend—Our 1994 Hilux Surf. After it took a month or two to sell our motorbike, we thought we’d be organised and list the Hilux well in advance of our leaving date so that we didn’t have to rush to sell it at the […]

Not winning the lottery—Saving for long term travel: Part One

The story of how we’ve never won the lottery (Or “how to save enough money to quit your job and travel the world for a while”) Let’s start this out by reinforcing the point that we haven’t won the lottery. Well, we once we won $14, but that was on a $20 ticket, so the […]

Three years ago

Three years ago, we were sitting looking over Machu Picchu. Sick of shuffling around like we were in a busy shopping mall, we had opted for hiding from the morning crowds in the quarry. We sat down and scoffed our Snickers bars we had carried with us for just such an occasion. After four days...

Thailand – Changing Plans, Racing the Clock and Bangkok Dangerous!!

Entering into Thailand was pretty straightforward to be fair. Things were going pretty smoothly on the border crossing front. I was back on the road and heading for Bangkok where I was planning to leave Boris for a few weeks before entering Myanmar. Well, that was the plan until about 1pm that...

Crossing into Thailand from Laos with Your Vehicle (At Vientiane / Nong Khai)

I recently crossed into Thailand from Laos at the Vientiane / Nong Khai border. As I was after a 60 day visa for me and my truck I thought I’d share the process I went through. Exit Vientiane Drive your vehicle as far to the front as possible then park and get out. Head to […]

Why?

So what has possessed us to sell what we can and pack the rest of our lives into the back of a four wheel drive? I’m not entirely sure, but here’s how it started: The conversation began when we were visiting Peru and Bolivia in 2010. As we travelled around we watched the country pass...

Why we are driving next time

The following are accepted facts when booking transport in Cambodia: Two hours will mean four… or more. Descriptions like ‘VIP’ and ‘Air-con’ are unrelated to the actual trip you are booking (they are simply added to make the sign eye-catching) Booking a...
