Coeur d’Alene

Sweet town, Coeur d’Alene. Beautiful lakeside neighborhoods. Awesome playgrounds. Lots of thrift shops and funky stores. Five – count ’em – FIVE sushi restaurants. We ate at three of them. One has $10 BOTTLES of wine on Wednesdays. Haven’t seen anything like that since Mendoza. They’re just starting to build upwards, so now might be the time read more

Bergdorf

From Stanley, we only had a few other recommended stops. One was McCall and the other was Bergdorf. Right next to each other. We hit the hot springs to beat the cold weather and camped again for free at a NFS site just down the road.. Natch, we stopped when we saw the sign for read more

Stanley

Next stop, Stanley, ID. Paul and Camille own a coffee stand here – Peaks and Perks – which is open June through mid-September. Then, they sell pumpkins in the SF Bay Area. Seriously, they sell pumpkins for a month. Then, they travel for 7 months a year. They returned last week from a winter in the Dominican read more

Challis

Though they traveled the Pan-American on motorbikes, Paul and Camille have joined the Westy-nation. We followed them north to Challis Hot Springs (and no one broke down!) We did have to slow down through a cattle drive. Idaho keeps surprising me. We were happy to finally have some sunshine. And happy to make some more read more

Chilly in Chilly

From the moon, we finally started north to go find some friends in Chilly, ID. We cruised through Hailey – nice town – before finding out that Sun Valley and Ketchum are just over-priced resort subdivisions. Kind of a bummer, but we weren’t staying long anyway. From there, we could turn up a road that just read more

Idaho Lava

Who knew there was so much lava in Idaho? Or nuclear reactors? We didn’t. At least we knew about the potatoes. The potato museum was a bust (not open) so we kept rolling to Craters of the Moon National Monument.  I don’t know why it’s a ‘monument’ and not a park, but it was an read more

Hot Lava

We had intended to stop and camp for the night somewhere between Jackson, WY and Idaho. There were several free campsites along the way, but the weather was cold and rainy and all the Forest Service gates were locked. We figured we’d be stuck in the bus, so we decided to keep rolling while it was daylight. We thought read more

Jackson

We finally left our picture-perfect free campsite in Montana, and drove a few minutes to Idaho. We made a quick stop to send an email. While Bode and I were in a coffee/embroidery/florist store Jason stayed at the bus to look at the map. He was approached by a guy who said he had 3 read more

Finally—Heading south like we’re supposed to!

When people enquire as to what we are doing as we aimlessly drive around the Americas we tend to respond with: ‘We’re driving from Alaska to Argentina’. Those in the know often respond with ‘Oh, so you are driving the PanAmerican Highway then?” To which we typically respond with a shifty sideways glance and say […]
