Adiós México

E o trem quebrou!

Baby turtles and Christmas in Los Barriles

After four days camping on a beach with not quite enough water, it was time to drive somewhere with a shower. We arrived in Ciudad Constitución ready for a nice hot shower. This didn’t eventuate, luckily they had cold water and we had a home-made hot shower packed on the roof-rack. Problem solved. We finally parted […]

How we ended up not really giving the Pacific coast much of a chance

We were starting to feel like we didn’t really like the Pacific Coast of Baja. I know that sounds a bit rough, I mean we live on the Pacific Coast of New Zealand, you think we’d have a soft spot for its sister coast in Mexico. Perhaps it wasn’t that we disliked the Pacific Coast, […]

Baja—apparently not just sunshine and sandy beaches

After a week relaxing on the beach south of Rosarito, recovering from zipping all over the USA like mad people, it was time to get moving again. We just didn’t move very far. A short roll down the coast to La Bufadora, just south of Ensenada had us arriving at what must have been the best […]

Loreto, B.C.S., Mexico

Loreto is home to a Mission which was built here in 1697. The town was the first Spanish settlement on the Baja peninsula and it grew up around this beautiful old stone tower. Loreto has a small protected harbor on… Read More ›

Bahia Concepcion

South along the coast from Santa Rosalia the road traces the waters edge more often than not. It’s only maybe 50 miles or so to the town of Mulege, which rests on the banks of the Mulege River as it… Read More ›

Central Baja

After packing up camp and getting on the road again, I have to retrace the 40 miles from BOLA (Bahia of Los Angeles) to Mex 1, the main north-south road on the peninsula. At the corner of Mex 1 we… Read More ›

Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California

After finally making it out of Coco’s road and over the next 15 miles or so of rocky, windy, hilly, sand and gravel kidney-jostling road, I get back to the main highway at Chepala. I’m headed for Bahia De (Bay… Read More ›

Coco’s Corner

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere…(and I’m from South Dakota, so I think I’m a pretty good judge of what the middle of nowhere is…)…lives an old Mexicano the locals call Coco.  He has lived along the edge of a… Read More ›

The Border to San Felipe

It’s 150 miles via the main highways to San Felipe from the border. The crossing has taken longer than I had expected, but that will be the story from now on. Clocks run slower in Latin America, and for that… Read More ›

Crossing into Old Mexico

In the book “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, Liz talks about finding a single word to represent or describe her. She takes the entire length of the story to figure it out, and chooses a beautiful Italian word I… Read More ›
